Event - Maypole Festival

20 May 2017

On Saturday 20th May 2017, our Year 4 children joined Sedgley Morrison men and two other local schools in the May Festival. This is a long standing tradition in Sedgley, with schools and the Morris men taking turns to dance.

Unfortunately the weather was awful - the heavy rain, which started as we processed around the green, continued throughout the morning. But our children still danced the Double plait, which results in the ribbons being plaited around the top of the Maypole and the Gypsy’s Tent, which is a very difficult dance. It was rather an unusual sight to see Maypole dancers wearing waterproofs!

Photos of the children dancing can be found on the Gornal and Sedgley Ministry website (external link).

It looked cloudy as staff carried the Maypole to the green.

As we lined for the procession it started to rain.

Mr Cooper and Mr Smyth carried the large Maypole in the procession.

And it continued to rain!

The children had to dance in their water proofs.

Year 4 danced the Double Plait.

Their second dance was the complicated Gypsy's Tent.

Carrying the Maypole back to school - still raining!
